Types of Paralysis

Paralysis can take different forms depending on where and how severely the spinal cord is injured. Tetraplegia (quadriplegia) involves injury to the upper spine, typically in the neck, that affects both the arms and legs. Paraplegia involves injury to the lower spine that affects the legs and lower body while sparing arm and hand function.

Spinal cord injuries may further be described as complete vs. incomplete. A complete injury means no motor or sensory function remains below the point of injury. An incomplete injury means some function remains, and the degree varies widely from person to person. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, incomplete tetraplegia is currently the most common classification of spinal cord injury, and fewer than 1% of people with a traumatic spinal cord injury experience complete neurological recovery by the time they're discharged from the hospital.

How Paralysis Injuries Happen

According to the same NSCISC data, the leading causes of traumatic spinal cord injury since 2015 have been:

Vehicle crashes (37.1%) are the single leading cause, whether from a car accident, truck accident, or motorcycle accident.
Falls (32.5%), including falls at work or on someone else's property.
Violence (15.2%), most often gunshot wounds.
Sports and recreation (7.6%), particularly contact sports.
