What Causes Plant & Refinery Explosions?

Plant and refinery explosions can occur suddenly, and often result from preventable safety failures. These facilities handle highly flammable materials, making strict safety protocols critical. When companies and managers fail to abide by these safety protocols, workers and even the public can pay a steep price for it.

Some of the most common causes of plant and refinery explosions include:

  • Improper maintenance or equipment failure. Faulty valves, pipelines, or pressure systems can lead to dangerous leaks.
  • Failure to follow safety procedures. Inadequate training or oversight can create hazardous working conditions.
  • Gas leaks or vapor buildup. Combustive substances can ignite from even a small spark.
  • Defective equipment or design flaws. Malfunctioning machinery can trigger catastrophic incidents.
  • Third-party negligence. Contractors or vendors may contribute to unsafe conditions if proper standards are not followed.

A full investigation will be necessary to determine exactly what caused this explosion and who may be responsible.
