What Happened in the Roehm Ammonia Leak in Matagorda County?
On the afternoon of Friday, March 7, 2025, an ammonia leak was reported at the Roehm USA facility off FM 3087, southwest of Bay City in Matagorda County. According to officials, the release occurred while crews were commissioning a chiller unit at the plant, which had not yet begun full operations and was in the final stages of starting up. A pressure safety valve on a brine chiller reportedly malfunctioned, causing an over-pressurization that released ammonia vapor into the air.
The facility’s alarm and safety systems activated, and emergency crews and the company’s response team moved to evacuate and evaluate workers in the area. Roehm has stated that several contractors working on-site at the time were affected by the ammonia. Around 10 employees and contractors were taken to area hospitals for treatment and observation, with one worker transported by helicopter. Others were evaluated on-site for breathing issues before being released.
Roehm and Matagorda County officials both stated that the leak was contained and posed no threat to the surrounding public, and no shelter-in-place order was issued for the community. Still, in the weeks after the incident, multiple workers who were exposed to the ammonia went on to file lawsuits against Roehm America, alleging that they had suffered serious injuries as a result of the company’s failure to maintain a safe worksite. If you were among those affected, it’s important to understand that a company’s public statements about “no danger” don’t always reflect the reality of what exposed workers experienced or the injuries that they’re still dealing with.
