What Happened at the ONEOK Plant in Mont Belvieu, Texas

Just before 11 a.m. on October 6, 2025, a fire broke out in the heating system of the MB-4 fractionator at ONEOK’s Mont Belvieu complex, near State Highways 146 and 99 in Chambers County. The complex separates natural gas liquids into products like propane and butane, and the explosion was strong enough that residents several miles away reported feeling their homes shake.

ONEOK shut down operations across the complex as a precaution, and crews extinguished the fire, which stayed contained to the MB-4 unit. Three contract workers were taken to a hospital in Baytown for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No evacuation was ordered for the surrounding community, and nearby roads stayed open throughout the response. In the weeks that followed, several of the injured workers filed a negligence lawsuit against ONEOK and two contracting companies working on-site, alleging that unsafe conditions, inadequate warnings, and lapses in training, supervision, and maintenance contributed to the fire. The official cause is still under investigation.

What Causes Plant Explosions?

Facilities, like ONEOK’s Mont Belvieu complex, process enormous volumes of natural gas liquids, which are highly flammable and require constant, careful maintenance of heating systems, valves, and pressure controls. When that upkeep slips, the consequences can be severe.

Common contributing factors in plant fires and explosions include:

  • Improper maintenance or inspection of equipment
  • Failure to follow safety protocols
  • Chemical leaks or vapor buildup
  • Defective machinery or components
  • Negligence by contractors or third parties
  • Poor coordination between site owners and outside contractors

What Are the Effects of Plant Explosion Injuries?

Plant and refinery explosions can cause a number of severe and life-changing injuries.

Accident victims may suffer from the following conditions:

  • Burns, scarring, and facial disfigurement
  • Hearing loss resulting from the loud noise of the blast
  • Crush injuries and broken bones
  • Traumatic brain injury, especially from misplaced debris or machinery
  • Respiratory issues from smoke inhalation
  • Chemical exposure and toxic poisoning
  • Psychological trauma, including PTSD or anxiety

Even those were weren’t on-site at the ONEOK MBC Maintenance Plant could have experienced health effects from smoke or chemical exposure from the explosion. It could also be that injuries did not appear immediately but worsened over time. After any exposure to a plant explosion, it is important to seek medical treatment immediately and to continue monitoring symptoms over time.
