Houston Ship Channel Chemical Leak Lawyers
What Happened in the Channelview Sulfuric Acid Spill
Around 2 a.m. on December 27, 2025, emergency responders were called to an industrial site in Channelview, Texas. A catwalk had collapsed and ruptured a six-inch supply line, triggering a massive release of spent sulfuric acid at the BWC Terminals facility along Jacintoport Boulevard. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, local fire marshals and hazmat professionals, the U.S. Coast Guard, and EPA personnel responded to contain and monitor the spill.
Two people were taken to the hospital for respiratory issues and later released, while roughly 44 people were evaluated on-site. Officials say most of the sulfuric acid was captured in the facility’s containment area, but an unknown amount escaped into a slip that’s connected to the Houston Ship Channel before the leak was stopped. Crews collected water samples in the days that followed to try determining just how much reached the channel.
An estimated one million gallons of spent sulfuric acid were released from the tank in total. At the time of the chemical leak, at least one lawsuit has stated that a large gas cloud was also released from the facility and rolled toward the ship channel, enveloping workers in toxic gas without warning. If you or a loved one were injured or impacted by this chemical leak, you may have the right to pursue compensation for your injuries, medical bills, and other damages.

What Are the Effects of Sulfuric Acid Exposure?
Sulfuric acid is an extremely corrosive industrial chemical that poses serious health and safety risks when released into the environment.
Exposure can cause the following:
- Severe chemical burns to the skin and eyes, potentially leading to permanent tissue damage or blindness
- Respiratory damage when inhaled, causing irritation, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, chemical pneumonitis, and, in serious cases, long-term lung injury or life-threatening respiratory failure
- Headaches, nausea, and throat irritation
Because sulfuric acid reacts violently with water and many other substances, spills also create significant dangers for first responders, workers, and nearby communities, making prompt containment and medical evaluation critical after any release.
What Types of Compensation Are Available for Chemical Leak Injuries?
Victims of chemical leaks may be entitled to financial compensation for injuries, medical bills, and other damages.
The following are some of the potential sources of compensation that victims of a chemical leak accident can recover:
- Respiratory distress or illness after the spill
- Chemical burns or irritation
- Time away from work due to exposure
- Ongoing health issues related to sulfuric acid contact
